Letter: Merrill Piepkorn’s heart is in the campaign, and it shows.

I’ve never viewed my dad, Merrill Piepkorn, as a politician. When our friends in District 44 encouraged him to run for state office, it wasn’t due to a political agenda. After he played a key role in helping our local school navigate a financial challenge, we recognized the positive change he could bring. This realization propelled him into eight years of dedicated service as a State Senator. Now, he has an opportunity to make an even greater impact as governor.

Growing up, I’ll never forget the embarrassment I felt when Merrill insisted on introducing me to people everywhere we went. Now, I see those moments differently. He wasn’t just making small talk; he was building connections and making people feel seen. His kindness and enthusiasm for getting to know people have always set him apart, and those qualities are exactly what make him the leader North Dakota needs. The lessons he taught me shaped who I am today: To be grateful, stay open-minded, let life experiences challenge my views, and always show up for others.

For those following his campaign, you’ve likely seen his energy firsthand as he visits communities across the state to engage with voters (Facebook: ND State Senator Merrill Piepkorn for Governor). His heart is in this, and it shows.

I’m incredibly proud of my dad for running a campaign focused  on the people. Take a few minutes to get to know him before you cast your vote this election.
